Constitutions

Membership with Benefits – Clubs Victoria advice, service and assistance

A constitution is a set of fundamental principles or established recedents according to which a club or organization is governed. These rules together make up, i.e. constitute, what the club is. When these principles are
written down into a single or set of legal documents, those documents may be said to comprise a written constitution.

Constitutions are generally highly valued for they allow continuity of the organisation and rarely do they change; but change they must to allow clubs to maintain their relevance to members within various eras. Some clubs have constitutions over 100 years old and therefore may not be relevant to modern times.

When a club constitution is silent on an issue, more often than not the legal precedent refers back to the model rules as set out by the Department of Justice. A link from this page will allow clubs to read the model rules.

The Clubs Victoria Constitution has evolved and the latest edition is available for members.
