Who are we:
Brainwave Australia raises money for the Children's Neuroscience Centre at the Royal Children's Hospital. The Centre was established in 1996 when the hospital departments of neurology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology and nursing joined forces, and already they have gained a reputation of international excellence in the treatment of brain, spine and eye disorders in children.

Importantly their work embraces not only children who suffer such disorders but also their families. Brainwave helps them to cope, to manage and hopefully to improve the quality of their lives under difficult and sometimes heartbreaking circumstances.

You and your club are the central figures in our charity, for without your goodwill and generous corporate funding the Children's Neuroscience Centre will not achieve its full potential.

Where do funds go?

Research
Brainwave is seeking funds to maintain the Centre's existing internationally recognised research programs and to establish clinical and research fellowships.

Ward re-development and accommodation.
Brainwave is seeking funds for two types of accommodation.

1. Accommodation for Parents
Children recover faster when loved-ones are nearby. So Brainwave need funds to provide a home-away-from-home for parents.

2. Office and laboratory space
Brilliant young researchers are sought out by institutions such as ours, both within Australia and internationally. To compete, we urgently need high standard accommodation for our trainees.

Equipment
Neuroscience equipment is costly. To keep pace with worldwide developments in all fields of neuroscience and to continue to provide the highest level of diagnosis and treatment for our children, new equipment is an on-going requirement. Brainwave is urgently seeking funding for the purchase of new equipment for all the departments of the Children's Neuroscience Centre.

Brainwave need only three things in constant supply to progress the work of our Neuroscience Centre.

1. We need people. Neuroscience specialists and trainees. The finest we can attract, train and maintain in all three neuroscience departments and in neuroscience nursing.

2. We need equipment. The latest, the best, the finest from around the world. Specialist equipment and materials to allow our people to bring hope and opportunity to children who otherwise might have to accept much less from life.

3. We need research. On-going, ever advancing, highly specialist, never ending research. Like our research in Ophthalmology to improve surgical treatments and screening machines for detecting visual problems and gaining understanding of genetic eye disease. Research to understand how head injuries affect children's development.

Such research is pushing back the boundaries of brain and eye disorders. It is research that will extend the learning and will ultimately make the breakthroughs our children, all children, must have.
